Well, this is new. And fun. Today I launched something on Product Hunt for the first time. VidEditor.ai. A small tool that turns long-form videos into shorts.
What it does
Pretty simple, really. If you're creating longer video content (podcasts, interviews, tutorials) and you want to reshare that on YouTube Shorts, Instagram Reels, or TikTok, you need to cut it up first. That's what this does.
Upload your long video. AI transcribes it, finds the interesting bits. You decide what's actually worth sharing. Download or schedule directly to platforms.
The AI scheduling part is actually my favorite as this tends to be tedious repetitive work. You can just tell it "post these 10 shorts over 5 days, prefer mornings" and it figures out the rest.
Why I built this
We needed it for The Monkey Patching Podcast anyway. We have a bunch of video content and we were always behind on turning it into shorts. For months I had a collection of hacked-together scripts. ffmpeg commands, some transcription APIs, Python glue. It worked, but every time we needed to process something it was a bit of a circus.
So this was a good excuse to build something a tad more mature. What started as "let's clean up these scripts" turned into VidEditor.
The whole thing took about three weeks. Fun side project.
What's next
Honestly? I'm going to use this for the Monkey Patching Podcast and run it for fun on the side.
The plan fairly straightforward: trickle in some first users, see how they use it, smooth out the bugs that will surely pop up (because they do), and once things are stable, maybe do a bit of promoted content to get the word out there.
Basically just a useful tool that scratches my own itch, and might scratch yours too.
